First Stop on your Private Boat Trip Kinbane Castle
After leaving Ballycastle on your Private Boat trip you will first pass Kinbane Castle
Built in 1547 by Colla MacDonnell, Kinbane Castle stands on a narrow limestone headland rising sharply from the sea. The name Kinbane means “White Head”, reflecting the pale cliffs beneath it.
The castle was badly damaged during English attacks in the 1550s, and local legend tells of English soldiers trapped and killed below the cliffs in an area known as Lag na Sassenach — “Hollow of the English.” From the sea, Kinbane’s exposed position shows just how formidable this coastal stronghold once was.
Then we will Head west along the coast towards Carrick a rede
Carrick-A-Rede is a must see on your Private Boat trip
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic attractions, offering visitors an exhilarating crossing high above the sea. Salmon fishermen have used rope bridges to reach the island for over 350 years, though the structure has evolved significantly over time. Earlier bridges were very basic; as recently as the 1970s, the crossing featured only a single handrail and wide gaps between the wooden slats. Today’s bridge delivers a much safer experience while retaining the thrill of the original crossing.
A series of upgrades took place in the early 2000s, culminating in the current wire-rope and Douglas fir bridge, built by Heyn Construction in Belfast and installed in 2008. The bridge spans approximately 20 metres, is about 1 metre wide, and hangs roughly 30 metres above the rocks and sea below. It offers stunning coastal views and an unforgettable adventure for visitors.
If you’re afraid of heights, our sea safari is the perfect way to see the bridge from below. Just a short distance from here, we’ll cruise past Sheep Island and Ballintoy Harbour.

Sheep Island
Sheep Island is a small, uninhabited island off the rugged north coast of County Antrim near Ballintoy. Covering about 3.5 hectares and just half a kilometre from the mainland, it is easily seen on coastal boat trips. The island is known for its dramatic natural features, including jagged rocky shores and cliffs rising nearly 20 metres. From the sea, its domed summit stands above the cliffs, covered with lush grass and soil. Sheep Island offers a stunning view of pristine coastal landscape and is a must-see for boat visitors. Highlighting the raw beauty of the Antrim coastline, it attracts photographers and wildlife lovers alike.
Rathlin West Lighthouse
Perched dramatically on the rugged western tip of Rathlin Island, Rathlin West Lighthouse stands as one of Northern Ireland’s most striking coastal landmarks. Built directly into the towering cliff face and first illuminated in 1919, this unique “upside-down lighthouse” is unlike any other in Ireland — visitors enter at the top and descend to the light below. This innovative design allows the lighthouse to shine beneath the low clouds and mist that frequently roll in from the Atlantic.
As we cruise past on our sea safari, you’ll enjoy this remarkable structure from the best vantage point — the water. Surrounded by crashing waves, swirling currents, and dramatic rock formations, the lighthouse sits at the heart of Rathlin’s richest wildlife waters. Keep an eye out for seals sunning on the rocks, seabirds soaring overhead, and dolphins occasionally riding the bow wave. Combined with the raw beauty of the cliffs and the power of the ocean, Rathlin West Lighthouse is a true highlight of every island adventure — a moment you’ll never forget.

Private Boat trip Optional Church Bay Rathlin Stop
On your private boat trip, a visit to Church Bay is essential. This vibrant heart of Rathlin Island serves as the main harbour where island life meets the sea. Nestled between rugged hills and colorful houses, this picturesque bay has welcomed sailors, fishermen, and visitors for centuries. Today, it stands as the gateway to Rathlin’s unique charm, featuring a small harbour, a historic church, and a warm island community set against a dramatic coastal backdrop.
As we glide into Church Bay on our sea safari, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the village from the water—often accompanied by playful seals and seabirds soaring overhead. This tranquil stretch of coastline offers a striking contrast to the wild Atlantic cliffs on the island’s western side. It’s the perfect spot to slow down, absorb the scenery, and enjoy the peaceful side of Rathlin after the exhilaration of open-sea adventure.
Church Bay perfectly captures the essence of Rathlin Island: remote, breathtaking, and rich in character—a standout highlight on any visit to this remarkable island.
